ABOUT THE ROLE & COMPANY
We are seeking a licensed and experienced Survey Project Manager (PLS) to lead complex surveying projects, ensuring technical accuracy, regulatory compliance, and project profitability. This senior-level role focuses on the business, financial, and personnel management of the Survey Division while utilizing the PLS license for final legal certification and technical oversight. This is a senior leadership position responsible for maintaining the highest standards of surveying practice and driving project execution within the civil engineering and land development sectors.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Project & Financial Management: Lead the comprehensive management of survey projects, including proposal writing, scheduling, and controlling profitability. Monitor and process financial information, performing monthly prebill reconciliations and managing accounts receivable.
- Legal Certification: Review, stamp, and certify final survey plans, maps, and documents, taking legal responsibility for accuracy and compliance with state and county regulations.
- Technical Oversight & QC: Provide advanced technical direction to Survey Crew Chiefs and Technicians. Perform Quality Control (QC) and validation of all field data, including GPS collection and 3D scanning.
- Business Development: Develop and maintain strong client relationships and perform business development activities to generate new work.
- Team Leadership: Recruit, hire, manage, mentor, and retain staff. Supervise teams effectively while maintaining strict safety standards on-site and in the office.
- Regulatory Coordination: Coordinate with state and local municipalities for certifications and permits. Support deed research, plotting, and the preparation of plats and legal descriptions for right-of-way acquisition.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & wORK eNVIRONMENT
- Frequent sitting for long periods utilizing a computer for administrative and CAD work.
- Occasional standing, walking, and navigation on rough, uneven terrain for site visits and project verification.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Work is performed primarily indoors, with occasional travel for project sites, client meetings, or inspections.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Licensure: Current, active licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in the state of operation is required. Multi-state licensure is strongly preferred.
- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or at least five (5) years of equivalent experience as a licensed PLS and Project Manager. A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in land surveying/geomatics is required.
- Technical Expertise: Proven experience with ALTA surveys, construction staking, and data processing workflows. Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles related to land development is essential.
- Software Proficiency: High level of proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D is required. Experience with MicroStation, Revit, or GIS platforms (ArcGIS) for spatial analysis is a plus.
- Equipment Knowledge: Proficiency with modern survey equipment, including Trimble systems and 3D scanners for precise measurements.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret technical schematics and construction plans accurately while applying advanced math concepts such as trigonometry and algebra.
- Compliance: Valid driver’s license with an acceptable MVR. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and a comprehensive 7-year criminal background check.
